We all understand the pressures facing staff at our schools and colleges. Whilst in an ideal world we would always be able to work at school, sometimes this is not possible as evidenced by the recent adverse weather conditions and the number of school closures. This means that staff will be able to access important school information remotely i.e. lesson plans, resources, pictures and reports from their home computer or laptop. Many Teachers work from home by means of transferring documents to a memory stick or laptop and working on them from home, however this often leads to problems and confusion as to where the document is stored i.e. is it on the home computer, laptop, memory stick or school drive. Using a memory stick or laptop also poses a data protection problem and security issue. What if the memory stick or laptop were to be “lost” on the way home, we have all seen the embarrassing news headlines of laptops containing confidential details being left on a train or in a taxi. The chances are it would be found by someone who would want to know it’s contents and there could be a child’s personal details i.e. a special Needs Assessment on it. This could be very embarrassing for the school. Another problem is the high probability of introducing a virus into the school network as a result of using the memory stick on a home computer that has already been infected. Remote access frees up staff to be more productive when they are unable to get to school. In addition if staff are unable to stay late after the school finishes to complete important work i.e. planning for tomorrow’s lesson, the remote access system provides the flexibility to complete the work from home and for staff to use their time more efficiently.
